A strong crowd turned out at Shepley Cricket Club over the weekend to support the Shepley 10K Fun Run and the new Tractor Run.
Organisers were concerned about the weather. They need not have worried. The sun was out all day as tractors left the field at 10am and race goers got ready for the fun run.
The atmosphere was buzzing. It is always good to see the community coming together for events like these. The cricket club put on a tasty barbecue with chef Richard Haigh showing off his culinary skills. Plus there were stalls by the Shepley Beavers and the Shepley Village Association. Trustees and volunteers from the Shepley Hub also came down to support the event, together with local parish councillors and representatives from the local churches.
Even organisers from Shepley's Facebook community group joined in the fun. Good to see the cyber and real world coming together to support the local community.
The cricket club had organised plenty of games too, including wellie throwing plus egg and spoon races. However, the village stocks proved most popular, with a constant stream of customers lining up to wet sponge the unfortunate victim. The day's commentator suggested the club would be able to build a second cricket pavilion from these profits alone. Organisers are nw looking out for volunteers for next time!
And one 10K race goer commented on Facebook
"Absolutely fantastic race! Very well organised. Clear simple instructions given. Signage, km markers all spot on. Marshals friendly and well-informed. Finishers t-shirt and goodie bag of high quality. Refreshments during and post race available. Results fully processed and made available within just a few hours. If you're looking for a good 10k road race then this has to go on your short list."
And that Panama hat belonging to local farmer Colin Tinker. It's becoming an institution!
