We are sad to report the death of former Shepley resident Jessie Dey.

Jessie was the wife of Dr Martin Moorhouse Dey, the local GP who lived and practised in the village for over 50 years. She was a well-known figure in the local community who managed the General Practice. She got to know many people through her work. Jessie and Martin were much loved in the village and were friends to everyone.

Councillor Janet Roebuck, who knew Jessie well said:

"I am shocked and sad to hear about Jessie's death. Her children grew up with mine and we've always stayed in contact. She was such a lovely person who had time for everyone. Jessie was always there to give a helping hand to people. All our thoughts and love are with Martin and his family at this sad time."

The Dey family had been in the village for generations. Martin's father 'Old Doctor Dey' had lived and worked in his original practice at Gladstone House on the Knowle. Upon his death Martin continued his practice here before moving it into the centre of the village. Jessie was a nurse when she first met her husband. Upon Martin's retirement from General Practice the couple finally moved to Hoylandswaine.

Jessie leaves behind her husband and three children: Michael, Carolyn and Stephen. Plus grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to the funeral service at St John The Evangelist Church, Hoylandswaine on Friday 8th June at 3pm.

No flowers by request but donations for St John The Evangelist Church Funds would be appreciated, for which a box will be available at the service (cheques payable to Hoylandswaine PCC). All enquiries to T W Birks & Son, Woodhead Road, Holmfirth, HD9 2PR.

JESSIE MARGARET DAPHNE DEY. Died on 25th May 2018 suddenly and peacefully with her family by her side, aged 72 years.
